The internet has been on fire today with the leaks, rumors, and eventual confirmation of details surrounding Assassin’s Creed III. The rage all started yesterday when the Assassin’s Creed Facebook page changed their cover photo to a mysterious, snowy field that cryptically tagged Julian Auditore and Valle. Afterwards, an image surfaced online that was purportedly leaked by a Best Buy employee. The picture showed a man in the familiar Assassin’s hood, yet sporting a military-style jacket and standing in front of the original colonial flag. Ubisoft refused to comment at the time, but promised a big announcement regarding the series the following morning.
Earlier today, Game Informer had an image of the same Assassin standing shoulder to shoulder with George Washington on their homepage. The image was quickly pulled down, further fueling the rampant speculation. Then, Ubisoft unveiled the official box art for the upcoming title, putting all the rumors to rest.
To add to the frenzy, Game Informer updated their site again today with several images from ACIII, and revealed the game would be the cover story and featured article for their next issue.
For years now we’ve enjoyed the adventures of Ezio Auditore as he makes his way through the Italian Renaissance and Ottoman-controlled Constantinople. That story is over. Ever since the conclusion of Assassin’s Creed II, a senior team of Ubisoft developers has been secretly toiling away on what comes next. That team aimed high, with plans to examine and rethink every element of the franchise from the ground up, build something new, and take a full three year development cycle to do it.
The game that emerged is Assassin’s Creed III. Set in the latter half of the 18th century, we’ll see the war between the Templars and the Assassins escalate as it crosses over to the New World of America, and witness firsthand the events of the American Revolution. Caught in the conflict is a daring new hero in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. We have the full story of this new hero and the striking game in which he stars, along with exclusive screens and art from the project, all packed into a massive 13-page cover story.
So, there we have it. The details are scarce as of right now. What we know for sure is that Assassin’s Creed III takes place three centuries after the life of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and has our new, yet-to-be-named Assassin battling Templar forces in the backdrop of the Revolutionary War.
While we don’t know much else currently, Assassin’s Creed III is slated to release on October 30, 2012. With less than eight months to street, specifics should start popping up rather quickly. To borrow a brilliant line from a peer in the professional internet journalism community, “Conventional wisdom says that more details will become available during this year’s E3 convention.”
My spite aside, take a gander at these awesome pictures. All I’m gonna say is that I better be one of those lucky bastards that gets the Alex Ross variant. Seriously, that’s a goddamn thing of beauty.
